Maria Mejia Martin is the Director of Programming and Operations at Konojel, but on the ground she is known as “La Jefa” (the boss).
Maria has been the beating heart of Konojel since joining the organization in October 2013, and as the organization has grown she’s worked hard to expand and improve her skill set to keep up with the increasing demands of a flourishing international non-profit.
While Maria was only able to attend school through grade 6, she is the leader and point person for each of the programs, as well as day-to-day planning, accounting, hiring, training and supervising indigenous staff.
Maria has been featured in national publications in Guatemala, as well as recognized by community leaders in San Marcos La Laguna for her leadership and advocacy work. She is a strong, outspoken woman who is always eager to learn new skills and take on new challenges, for her own betterment at that of her vulnerable community.
